A strategic alliance can be crucial in the development of a new technology. In the case of HDTV, there was a real challenge to reconcile the extreme fragility of the fiber-optic technology with the rough field conditions of broadcasting. Not user-friendly at all, the first fiber-based products clearly didn’t satisfy the end-users, so that the transition from SD to HD was significantly impeded. The broadcast industry was looking for a reliable and convenient HDTV solution, which none of the technology supplier seemed to be able to provide, at least on its’ own. The idea of a partnership actually came from the broadcast industry itself: why not ask an expert in connectors to team up with an expert in fiber-optic to come up with a solution fully suiting the needs of broadcast applications?

Fischer Connectors, considered for long as a leader and a reference in the field of broadcast connectors, was approached by a consultant four years ago. Well-known for the quality and resistance of its products, specifically the established Fischer Broadcast Triax connectors (1051 and 1052 series), Fischer Connectors was for the industry an obvious candidate to consult when it came to propose a rugged and reliable connector. The challenge was that this connector would have to use state-of-the-art fiber-optic technology, a field Fischer Connectors didn’t have enough expertise in. So, the company Corning®, a leader in the manufacturing of fiber-optic and components, primarily specialised in the Telecom industry, was contacted and accepted to work with Fischer Connectors on the solution the broadcast market was waiting for.

The added value brought by the combination of two experts’ know-how was enormous as it allowed the development of an incredibly user-friendly and efficient connector: the new Fischer 1053™ HDTV Connector. Co-developed in an exclusive partnership, the Fischer 1053™ series combines the field-tested reliability of a Fischer’s broadcast connector body with the proven technology of Corning® UniCam® “No Epoxy - no polish” fiber-optic contacts. The Corning® UniCam® technology eliminates the difficult procedure of polishing fiber-optic elements, as well as using special epoxies. This brings huge benefits for end-users since the cable termination becomes simple and fast. No need to be an expert to carry out the assembly, which can be performed in 30 minutes that is 50% faster than currently available products. Demanding tests proved that, thanks to its fully sealed and strong connector body, the Fischer 1053™ HDTV Connector is showing outstanding resistance to rough field shooting conditions, like extreme climate, crushing of forklift trucks and other weight or tensions that cables could undergo.

Recognised with a Top Innovation Award for its ease of use and true field install-ability at the 2005 NAB show, the 1053™ Series HDTV Connector represents the culmination of decades of experience in Fischer Connectors’ and Corning’s respective industries. This winning strategic alliance enabled the development of a product that will allow a much easier transition to high definition television – the answer many camera manufacturers, mobile truck providers, production centers and broadcast studios have been waiting for!
