A strategic alliance can be crucial in the development of a new technology. In the case of HDTV, there was a real challenge to reconcile the extreme fragility of the fiber-optic technology with the rough field conditions of broadcasting. Not user-friendly at all, the first fiber-based products clearly didn’t satisfy the end-users, so that the transition from SD to HD was significantly impeded. The broadcast industry was looking for a reliable and convenient HDTV solution, which none of the technology supplier seemed to be able to provide, at least on its’ own. The Corning® UniCam® technology eliminates the difficult procedure of polishing fiber-optic elements, as well as using special epoxies. This brings huge benefits for end-users since the cable termination becomes simple and fast. No need to be an expert to carry out the assembly, which can be performed in 30 minutes that is 50% faster than currently available products.
